Gizem Gümüş: Is a craftsman who installs and repairs camera security systems
Since secondary school, she has been involved in working life, first during summer vacations and then at university. She graduated from the Department of Science and Technology Teaching. When she could not teach (when she could not be appointed), she started to research what she could do.
She participated in the Vocational Training Center program on-the-job training. She worked in a computer repair shop for six months. She wanted to continue this job, which she saw her interest and aptitude for. In the spring before the earthquake, she established her official business. She took four interns with her to learn the business and grow in the field like her. She paid particular attention to the fact that two of them were women, because she cared about the visibility of women in this field. Her intention was to provide social benefit and awareness. She had a regular income and felt productive.
She lost her workplace and equipment in the earthquake. “Instead of sitting and feeding on the pain, I want to accept the situation and take action,” she said, and returned to Hatay from Mersin, where she had gone due to housing problems.
Y“I started my business once, and I didn’t do it with very good opportunities. I did it on my own. After the earthquake, I didn’t want to work elsewhere, I wanted to succeed on my own. I knew I could do it on my own again. I didn’t want to work for someone else and give up on my dreams. I embraced my own dreams!”
First she worked as a mobile worker in tents. Two and a half months after the earthquake, she rented a small container. While she continues to hear the questions “You are a woman, why are you trying so hard? Wouldn’t it be better to settle down?” from those around her, it is obvious that she is having a hard time finding a place in the sector. “People are hesitant to give a job. They wonder if a woman can do this job. Setting up systems requires physical strength and men stand out. In addition, people always say that they don’t find it appropriate for a woman to enter and leave the work area. However, I go to do my job as a professional.”
As she was re-establishing her business, she heard about mavikalem’s program and wrote her application letter.
“It is important to be supported as a woman, I feel alone. This is not just a material, it is a support that will motivate me and improve my business.”
Gizem wants to develop her business gradually. She cares about investing in herself. Technology is not static and Gizem wants to follow every innovation and attend advanced trainings in her field. While continuing and developing her business, she aims to train new female professionals. With the computer purchased in mavikalem’s program, she can finish the works and installations faster. She can work with more up-to-date and new programs. This allows her to get more work.
